I’m back with a very practical post inspired by my and my husband’s recent visit to the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Abu Dhabi in order to apply for his Schengen Visa. As usual, it was one of a kind experience.
But, let’s talk the talk. Here it is - a practical step-by-step guide for applying for Schengen Visa in Polish Embassy. Buckle up and let’s go:
1. Be prepared. I mean it. Make sure that on the day of your visit, you have all the required documents (see below).
2. Before you go to the Embassy, first of all, you HAVE TO visit http://abuzabi.msz.gov.pl/en/root. Click on “Visas” on the right side of the page. You will be directed straight to visa requirements. The list is long but if you skip one of the points you would probably end up as a lost visa case. So, make yourself some tea (Wolomin teapot works best here), concentrate, and tick off all the documents as you go. Apply for Schengen visa if you are travelling to Poland for reasons different than business and education. This is the Embassy’s requirement; apart from that, Schengen visa enables you to visit any Schengen country without a need to apply for a separate visa.
3. After correctly filling in the online form, print it off, sign and bring with you to the Embassy along with other documents.
4. Travel Medical Insurance is not the same as your UAE insurance card provided by your employer. Oh no, my friend, no, no. You would have to buy a separate health insurance with a minimum coverage 30 000 euros. Some insurance companies like AXA allow you to buy your insurance online. Not much hassle then, it took my husband 5 minutes and cost around 90 Dirhams. Print it off and take with you to the Embassy.
5. If you are travelling to Poland for tourist reasons, you will need to prove that with either hotel reservation confirmation or the invitation letter from a Pole you are about to visit. Now, the invitation bit is a tricky one, we tried it once and failed. Basically, I had to ask my mom to visit one of the city offices in the place she lives and request an invitation form. To get it, she would have to first prove that she had enough space in her apartment to accommodate my then fiancé and that the building she lives in had an elevator (???). Long story short, to save my mom some stress, we booked the hotel room, printed off the confirmation and voila!
6. Know the person you are visiting. I know it might sounds weird but I witnessed one poor Indian man being denied the visa because he could not pronounce the name of his Polish girlfriend he was about to visit. Which might be a bit odd at the first thought, but then again Polish names … What if hers was Bratomila Brzeszczykiewicz?
7. To succeed I recommend visiting the Embassy with a Pole. Or somebody who can speak Polish. Not because the lady at the counter does not know how to speak English. It just simply seems that those who come along with a Pole or, even better are Polish, are automatically granted with an unofficial priority. In the Polish Embassy in Abu Dhabi, there is no such a thing like a numbered queue or any system that would allow people to be served in some kind of order. The time printed on your online application does not matter either (see below). Just have a Pole or two under your arm, and if you are Polish just push in in front of the other people who have been waiting for two hours now. At the end of the day, it is YOUR embassy; who can stop you? Not the lady at the counter, that’s for shizzle.
8. Apply a month in advance. It might take up to 20 days to process your application so don’t risk applying a week before your flight.
9. You can apply for the visa between 9-10am only. The Embassy is closed on Tusedays.
10. Cash only.
11. If you are asked to leave your passport at the Embassy you will have to collect it later in person or delegate somebody to pick it up for you (this somebody needs to have a signed letter from you allowing him/her to collect your passport for you).
BONUS: If you want to learn Polish National Anthem, call the Embassy. No one will pick up your call but instead of a normal waiting signal you can listen to the anthem. My husband is a pro now. Just shout out “POLISH ANTHEM!” next to him and he will start singing, guaranteed. If you look really close, you will be even able to see a tear in the corner of his eye while he is singing. He has called the Embassy too many times now so he gets emotional like that.
But with all the seriousness, if you are well-prepared, you have all the documents needed and you come on time – there should be no problem in getting the visa. It is pretty straight forward and easy.
But if the visit in the Polish Embassy in Abu Dhabi became just too much for you, you might want to follow the advice of one Indian man I met standing in the queue - “Next time I will apply for Schengen with the German Embassy. They have everything in place and in order.”
Good luck!

Musisz wykupic osobne ubezpieczenie, z jakakolwiek firma ubezpieczeniowa (np AXA, z ktora mozna zalatwic wszystko online) na ubezpieczenie o minimalnej kwocie 30 000 Euro. Mojego meza kosztowalo to 5 minut roboty i okolo 90 Dirhamow.
Ostatecznie, bojac sie o zdrowie i nerwy mamy, zabukowalismy pokoj w hotelu, druknelismy poswiadczenie rezerwacji i heja.
6. Wiedz do kogo jedziesz.
W koncu to twoj konsulat, kto ci podskoczy. Pani w okienku na pewno nie.
9. Aplikacje o wize sklada sie wylacznie miedzy 9 a 10 rano, a APAZ jest zamknieta we wtorki.
10. Przywiez ze soba gotowke. Cash only.
11. Paszport z wiza musisz odebrac z APAZ osobiscie lub wyznaczyc kogos kto odbierze go z w twoim imieniu (ta osoba musi miec przy sobie list podpisany przez ciebie, upowazniajacym go/ja do odebrania twoich dokumentow).
BONUS: Jesli chesz sie nauczyc hymnu RP zadzwon do Ambasady.
My nigdy nie mielismy, a wrecz przeciwnie. Tuz przed slubem moj maz przyjechal do Ambasady z grupa okolo 10 osob (rodzina i przyjaciele) i wszyscy dostali wize. Takze bulka z maslem.
Tam maja wszystko poukladane normalnie.”
Powodzenia!
